Balmy Beach Canoe
Club News
Commodore’s Report
As the incoming Commodore, I would like to talk about what the new season will look like. We have reorganized the executive and assembled committees to ensure that Beach has another successful year. The committees and their members are dedicated and looking forward to the challenges ahead. We have the results of the surveys back and will use your input to assist the executive in managing the Club this new season.
The website (www.balmybeachcanoe.com) is up and running, please check the website for any information updates you may need. Gaynor will be emailing website update bulletins when changes are made.
We will be traveling to Regina for C.K.C Championships (C.C.A.) August 23-26, 2006 and Canmas August 27, 2006. We are exploring chartering a jet to get everyone there. We are trying to stay away from taking a bus, but that does remain an option.
This coming season will be a huge challenge to replace the $52,000.00 we will not receive from the charity bingos that we have participated in over the past years. With everyone participating in fundraising events, the executive feel confident that these funds can be replaced. We will be asking for a $100.00 cheque to be submitted with registration fees from each family or Paddler. At the end of the season, the cheque will be cashed. In lieu of this, each family or Paddler must participate in at least one volunteer/fundraising event during the year.
We are adding a Spring and Fall Rock and Roll Car Wash and Garage Sale, tentatively set for May 6 and September 16/06, so please, don’t throw any or your junk out.
Our camp director, Lynn Roworth, did an outstanding job and was able to fill the camp beyond capacity for most of the summer. The camp not only provides regular sports such as baseball and soccer, but also introduces youngsters to paddling.
2005 Annual General Meeting
The Balmy Beach Canoe Club Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday October 22 in conjunction with the Awards Night that followed.

Our next big fundraisers are “The Mish Mash Sale” December 17, and “The Hair of the Dog” Fun Run on New Years Day. Volunteers are needed

Fundraising is more important than
ever this coming year. A Bingo
that has been operating on behalf of the Canoe Club for the last 10 years has
been shut down. This means that somehow we have to make up
approximately $52K in order to provide the same type of program that we have
enjoyed in the past. The
Hair of the Dog Fun Run/Walk is a lot of
fun. It sure would be nice if our
paddlers, both sprint and dragon boat, along with their parents, would take
part. In the past we were lucky if
we had 10 paddlers signing up and most of these were the Bain family.

youth sizes. We will also have for
sale, Pewter replicas of the 1st Balmy Beach Club in celebration of
100 years of paddling. The Club,
and other Sections of the Club, will also have items for sale.

Canmas Montreal
The Canadian Master Championships, held on
the Sunday following the CCA Championships attracted a record number of participants
to the event. (576 men and women).
A second record was established with the running of 165 races beginning
at 8 am and ending at 6:30 pm that soon appealed to the paddlers and the
spectators.
On the Saturday, the talk was :”impossible,
be here till midnight, have to light the course etc”
Needless to say something had to be
done. The races were changed from
500m to 200m. At first there was some
dissatisfaction. 2 –3 races would
line up behind the starting line with the next event starting in minutes.. There were numerous events with 2 &
3 and even 4 heats being run ie:
Novice Women’s K-1 (35-44) 4 heats – 28
competitors
Men’s K-1 (40-44) 3 heats – 26 competitors
It was continuous action at the Finish Line

CCA 2006 - Regina, Saskatchewan First Alert!!
For the first time in CCA’s history the CCA Championships will be held in Regina August 23 to 26 with Canmas on August 27.
The Wascana Racing Canoe Club will be our hosts.
In 2005 the Canoe/Kayak events at the Canada Games were held on Wascana Lake and $20M was spent dredging and making other improvements and the site is excellent.
A great spot for families to consider for next year’s vacation! The Club is looking forward to this opportunity and working hard to organize this event for paddlers and their families.
Travel arrangements are currently under investigation. (Note: Families may choose to make their own travel arrangements taking personal vacation plans into consideration.)
